This is a book for beginning cooks, although you'll want to move on to joy of cooking. It has more to do with using a knife, and reasons for searing food first than using the oven. There are only a few recipes, none of which are indexed or noted by chapter. The recipes I tried did not come out well.I think an experienced cook would be disappointed, but people new to cooking and new to outdoor cooking and camping will have a great time with it.

Really not a bad book but is geared more for campfire cooking not indoors...but you can always use the recipes and use your black pots on or in your stove
This book was ok. A little to wordy for me
Some may be frustrated by the slow pace, but I loved it. This cookbook comes across as if the author is an old friend hanging out in your backyard, swapping stories and showing you step-by-step how it's done. I was amazed with my first effort. Delicious!
If I were a camper, this book would be a great resource for learning campfire cooking.
However, I bought the book as a gift to teach simple stove top cooking techniques to a brand new cook using a small Dutch oven.
My college student kept the book & the Dutch oven but I'm not really sure if the book will be a good resource for him.
Good directions for seriously seasoning old cast iron. Seasoned an 8" skillet that I cooked my first food on I when I was 7 and a 10" omlette pan I got for my mom on Mothers Day in 6th grade, now 50+. Now both look better than ever deep, dark, shiny black and perform much better. Yes bacon and eggs stick some, clean up is easy. Another tip author has is tpo preheat tany cast iron in the oven at 4-500 degrees to heat evenly because cast iron apparently doesn't. Nice, good trick.
If you have a duch oven and think you know all there is to know about it you need this book. it is about the different ways to cook with a duch oven. it is about how to control the heat. it is about prepairing your food and is loaded with rescipes that will make you the favored cook at home or at camp. it takes you step buy step. I cherish this book and go back to it time and time. to my friends and family that have black pots this is what I give on birthdays.
When I opened this book to get started with my cast iron cooking, I was stunned at the great information provided. Step by step on 'how to' and 'why'. This is a great way to learn the right way to cook with cast iron cookware, and my oh my, what a marvelous way to cook your food. (Reminds me of the pioneer days of how they cooked over the open hearth or the cowboys with their chuck wagons). Truly a great book to have if you want to learn and understand what 'black pot' cooking is and the appropriate way to cook it! Have fun!
